Engage Louisa is a nonpartisan newsletter that keeps folks informed about Louisa County government. We believe our community is stronger and our government serves us better when we increase transparency, accessibility, and engagement.
A short break for Engage Louisa
Engage Louisa has been delivering in-depth coverage of Louisa County government news nearly every week for more than three years. We do it because we believe open government and engaged and informed citizens are critical to sustaining our democracy.
Outside of the help of a kind and generous proofreader, this free newsletter is largely a one-woman show. I spend hours each week attending county meetings and writing and researching articles in an effort to not just report the news but help readers make sense of it.
Engage Louisa is a passion I pursue while juggling a day job and other obligations. In a world where profit-driven corporate media has gobbled up local news outlets across the country, I believe Louisa County residents deserve a homegrown, independent news source that’s focused on detailed and fact-based coverage.
The last week has been the most difficult of my life. On Thursday, July 4, we lost my mother, Brenda Brooks Purcell. Mama died after a brief second battle with breast cancer. She was the strongest and most giving person I have ever known, and her passing has left a huge void in our family.
As we grapple with the loss of this amazing woman, Engage Louisa will take a short break from our regular publication schedule. We won’t publish today or next week, but we plan to be back in late July.
Thank you so much for reading Engage Louisa and your continued support.

So sad to learn of your mother's passing - she and Dicky were such welcoming neighbors when we live in Louisa back in the early 80s. Please pass along my condolences to Dicky and your sisters. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
